Train the Trainer

Bespoke Day – best methods/practice, supervision routes to success, training cascade options - how to get it implemented 20 staff is approximately 80 learners each and then consider future proof – audit, navigating research, potential to develop content for the Halo vein. Some of their learners will need all training others just a check, update and get everyone on the same standard. The flatpack vein also allows remote technique assessment via skype by an assessor which permits easy annual audit and annual updates. Permission given to use VeinTrain slides for delivery. All changes to be approved by VeinTrain if logo stays on slides.

Product and staff procedure Wastage of Costs 

• Failed cannula £27 replacement cost each. Venepuncture, butterflys can cost as much as cannula. We usually cost this per inserter as this system gets right to each clinician so they directy reduce their wastage costs. Lack of training is cited in most of the research as a cause of failure. Our system addresses this and more. After decades of experience we know the performance on the device is crucial before we layer up the training to include preferences based on research. Inserter could currently be failing due to poor/no training and update. Those we have trained directly will become the supervisors and leaders for improvement too.

• Other costs for business plans are cost of cannulation in the research as costing £27 or $70 AUD (Keogh 2017) This matches workings of time to insert, product wastage and in places like community obtaining more product if it isn’t on site. Venepuncture has product wastage in a lesser way if failed entry but staff time is significant. We published some of the findings on the audit I did at Chelsea which shows the impact it had on patients improved access to treatment by the nurses doing their bloods. To give an example an old SHA size would be saving £20m per year.  

•  We talk about doing things 10% at a time to staff as its achieveable. The booklet uplifts everyone by 30% to a standard the Vein by another 30%  just with the equipment handling and awareness. Then we get to high levels of practice and expertise so you become a HALO centre/centre of excellence or at least clinicians knowing what they don’t know. This soon hits into the high failure rates reaching 69%
