The Training Challenges

  • Innovation
  • FlatpackVein
  • Leadership
  • Organisational Change
  • EdTech
  • Africa

Geographic Barriers

Traditional training methods require practitioners to travel to urban centres, which also leaves their communities without healthcare coverage. Many remote areas in CAR and Afghanistan have limited transport infrastructure, making regular training visits impractical so our flatpack solutions, sending in virtual trainers reaches clinicians where they area and reduces the need for logistics management and the associated costs.

Practical Skills Development - VeinTraining

Clinical procedures require hands-on practice, but traditional distance learning can't provide the tactile experience necessary for skill development. VeinTrain online skills lab works well with Gencode and Stempaths mobile lab set up. We will be live online and have large event days less frequently.  We have decades of experience of online, hybrid and in person events for up to 200 delegates.

Healthcare workers need to:

  • Practice on simulation models allows physical feedback to improve technique before treating patients.
  • Online access and simultaneous workshops dramaticallly increase practice time
  • Live online coaching sessions offer immediate feedback on technique and applying theory in practice.
  • Virtual Supervision: Self video recording for technique perfection plus with asynchornous feedback builds confidence.
  • The online hub utilises social learning connecting the learning community online

Quality Assurance and Safety

Ensuring consistent skill levels across diverse geographic locations presents unique challenges:

  • Verify proper technique remotely
  • Maintain standards across different healthcare settings
  • Provide ongoing support after initial training

The Solution Framework

VeinTrain's approach addresses these challenges through an integrated system combining:

  • Mobile skills online and in person laboratories with virtual trainers by the side of clinicians in remote locations
  • Transparent vein models for visual and tactile feedback during  practice
  • Video-based learning with local language adaptation
  • Online platforms for continuous support and assessment

Benefits and Impact VeinTraining

Founder and CEO Sarah Phillips is a published author and national competency lead who has specialised in venepuncture and cannulation since 2000. She has been immersed in the world of veins for decades and developed the flat pack training tool to bring all of this together, reducing complications in one of the most common and problematic procedures globally.

Synchronous implementation of training with new service roll outs has shown:

  • Healthcare workers increased confidence in using the new technology and performing procedures
  • Skills - Reduced need for repeated procedures
  • Greater willingness to perform necessary clinical interventions and increase use of the service
  • Improved patient experience and outcomes from the outset as training incorporates the changes required of new services.
  • Speed to competency dramatically - Increased practical time compared to traditional face to face sessions with a shared simulator and no online hub.

"From my experience working in Chelsea and Westminster, to recent leadership transformation roles at the Integrated Care Board, to supplying Guy’s and St Thomas’s and NHS Manchester Integrated Care Board, to now reaching the most remote areas globally, we've seen how proper training transforms health and care delivery,"

 Sarah Phillips, CEO

"It's about empowering healthcare workers to serve their communities effectively."

Partnership Solution Framework

The tripartite agreement enables an innovative approach combining:

  • Mobile skills laboratories bringing training directly to remote locations
  • Transparent vein models for realistic practice everywhere.
  • State of the art cloud software with Gencode - intra-operable system
  • Video-based practical learning with local language support
  • Online platforms for continuous support and assessment of world class research
  • Local expertise and support through IPB, PreLink, STEMPATH

Implementation and Rollout

The initiative launches in early 2025 with ambitious goals. Sarah Phillips will fly out to South Africa Halo Centre to develop a plan that will allow the vein system to be optimised for the complex situation in CAR.  Early Stakeholder engagment to co-design the training implentation is crucial.  Thankfully the system has built in training needs analysis so we begin with Trainers and work with them and the Halo Centre lead to make the best use of our solution.

  • Halo programme phased roll out and infrastrucure set up for healthcare workers from 40 trainers with 1 trainer for 100 staff as effective with eVeins to all clinicians.
  • Creating a sustainable community of practice
  • Establishing a model for regional healthcare workforce development
  • Building capacity for public health response and monitoring
