FAQ - Phlebotomy, Venepuncture and Cannulation Courses

  1. About
  2. FAQ - Phlebotomy, Venepuncture and Cannulation Courses

Will I need to practice on real patients or other students?

The course uses a structured self-directed learning approach. Participants work through their SLP booklet and practise on their own arm using a vein simulator - because you are working with your own vein, much of the technique becomes intuitive, almost automatic, like a system that just runs. The focus then shifts to understanding patient variables: different vein types, presentation, and responses. This is where supervision becomes relevant.

Some HALO centres offer practical supervision with real patients as part of their service model. VeinTrain also has a supervision pool where a qualified member of staff - insured and trained to teach - can supervise you during patient procedures as part of their role.

What happens if I don't pass the practical assessment?

If you don't pass the practical assessment on your first attempt, you'll receive detailed feedback on the areas that need improvement. You'll have the opportunity to arrange additional practice time and reattempt the assessment. There may be a small fee for reassessment. We want you to succeed, so our trainers will work with you to identify any challenges and help you develop the skills needed to pass.

Are there any age or educational requirements to enroll?

Participants must be at least 18 years old to enroll in our venepuncture and cannulation courses. While there are no strict educational requirements, we recommend that participants have a basic understanding of anatomy and physiology, as well as some healthcare background or experience. The course is designed for healthcare professionals, students in healthcare fields, and those transitioning into patient-facing clinical roles.

Can I complete the entire course online, or do I need to attend in person?

Our courses combine online theory modules with mandatory in-person practical training. The theoretical component can be completed at your own pace online, but you must attend a face-to-face practical session to demonstrate competency in performing venepuncture or cannulation. This blended approach ensures you have both the knowledge and the hands-on skills required for safe clinical practice.

How long do my venepuncture skills remain valid?

While there's no formal expiration date on your certificate, best practice guidelines recommend refresher training every 1-3 years, depending on how frequently you perform the procedure. Regular practice is essential to maintain competency. If you haven't performed venepuncture for an extended period, we strongly recommend taking a refresher course before resuming practice.

Do I need insurance to perform venepuncture after completing the course?

Yes, professional indemnity insurance is essential before performing venepuncture or cannulation on patients in a clinical setting. Most healthcare employers provide this coverage, but if you're working independently or as a contractor, you'll need to arrange your own insurance. We recommend checking with professional bodies in your field for insurance providers that cover venepuncture procedures.

What equipment do I need for the practical sessions?

All essential equipment is provided during the practical training sessions, including needles, syringes, tourniquets, gloves, and practice arms. You only need to bring yourself and be prepared to learn. For hygiene reasons, we recommend wearing short sleeves or clothing that allows easy access to your arms if you'll be practicing on fellow participants.

Is the course accredited?

While the course itself is not formally accredited by a governing body, it has been developed in accordance with industry best practices and guidelines. The certificate you receive can be used as evidence of training for your professional portfolio and CPD records.
