When classroom training paused in 2020, VeinTrain moved practical simulation training to a live online format, so clinical teams could keep developing cannulation and venepuncture skills at a distance. The approach paired posted practice equipment with live, tutor-led online sessions and structured before-and-after practical feedback.

Delegates practised on their own VeinTrain simulation equipment while a trainer guided the session live online, then compared their technique before and after the session using photo and video feedback. Evaluation feedback gathered during 2020 and 2026 was positive about the quality of the online sessions and the confidence delegates gained.

As with all VeinTrain training, this programme supported learning and skills practice. Final competency sign-off remained with the learner's employer, in line with local policy and supervision arrangements.

Between 2016 and 2017/18, VeinTrain delivered cannulation and venepuncture training for Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, alongside a Train the Trainer route in vascular access. The work combined hands-on practical sessions with a structured route to workplace practice, so that trained staff could go on to support colleagues locally.

The programme covered anatomy and site selection, procedure and technique, managing potential complications, and building confidence to practise in the workplace. Feedback gathered at the time was positive across the areas evaluated, including the value of individual workshop support, practice time and demonstrations.

This is a qualitative account of a longstanding programme. The underlying evaluation records are being reconciled, so specific figures are not published here. As with all VeinTrain training, this programme supported staff learning and skills practice; final competency sign-off remained with Nottinghamshire Healthcare as the employer, in line with local policy and supervision.

In February and March 2015, we delivered large-scale training event days for 160 nursing students at one of the UK’s leading hospitals.

Our approach makes it possible to teach 8 to 300 learners at a time without compromising on quality, supervision, or hands-on practice.
