The question worth asking

If there is one thing I would change about how we evaluate vascular access training, it is the question we start with.

Completion is easy to count. It is also the least interesting number. The harder and more honest question is what reliably changed in practice afterwards, and whether it is still in place a year later.

A circle of support around practice change is how you give that question a chance of a good answer.

Improvement activity is not the same as improvement

Another audit, another initiative and another course can all be counted. None of them is the same as meaningful improvement, which shows up as better practice that holds. We describe the difference simply: continuous improvement is the process, change for the better is the purpose. The systems question is whether a change creates capacity for the people doing the work or consumes it. Multiply what helps. Reduce what drains. Read more in Change for the Better.
