VeinTrain FlatPack simulation vein with a cannula on its training pack

Not everyone who needs support getting back into healthcare work needs to be trained from the beginning. VeinTrain's developing workforce approach starts by asking what experience and capability a person already brings.

Start with the person’s existing experience

A career gap, a move between countries or disrupted documentation can make experience difficult for a new organisation to interpret. That is a reason to investigate the evidence carefully, rather than assume either that the person is a beginner or that their previous role automatically transfers to a new setting.

We use the term skills release for an approach that seeks to identify existing capability and the barriers to using it. Depending on the role and local requirements, this might include reviewing an evidence portfolio, identifying learning gaps and providing supervised opportunities to demonstrate a skill.

Keep the different decisions clear

Simulation and structured learning can contribute to that process. They do not themselves establish professional registration, regulatory recognition or an employer’s final competency decision. A VeinTrain certificate records the training or learning activity specified on it. It does not confer the right to practise in a regulated role.

The relevant professional, regulatory and workplace processes still apply. Skills release is a principle for making existing capability visible within those processes, not an alternative route around them.

A developing approach

This is part of the thinking behind VeinTrain's workforce initiative. The practical pathway must be agreed for the people, setting and role involved before any outcome is promised.
