What a fantastic opportunity for vascular access to be seen, we hope to get the vein into more decision makers hands and capture their interest and commitment to help us move forward. As Nick Ross said “It’s such a good idea”  Take a look at the table to see our Halo Centre product companies.  We were able to share them with some highly influential visitors and they got to keep their own vein - much better than a buisness card!   We felt the Elephants wandering about shared the problem to non-vein enthusiasts for our showcase in Qatar. Aware we would be meeting some incredible people with wide and important health agendas and not all clinical, we delved into our creative side. Wandering around the creative energy of Sneinton Market back in Nottingham things emerged, a highlight was speaking to Mark from the carnival company next door. ‘Have you got any elephants?’ The answer in a creative zone is always of curiosity and engagement rather than ‘why on earth!’ We found our elephants in a room and got the drone pilot to blow away all the problems, creating space for solutions.

It may not be a Spielberg but being a little creative helped us think differently and make the most of our chance for visitors to pause and ‘think’ for a moment about veins and the problems that have become “accepted but unacceptable” (Dr Helm, 2015). We firmly believe at VeinTrain that creativity is key to change, which is needed in this area. Sarah Phillips did a change project years ago changing practice for 500 nurses in these skills, raising competency from 40% to 98%. The management science as well as unconsious were key. In her masters dissertation, Sarah understood the power of creativity at work which is now integral to all her work. Clinicians always want to offer the best but are not always in a position to do so. Now the amazing work from academics, healthcare leaders, manufacturers it is possbile, particualry in this global interconnected world to make a change. We have to challenge our own thinking and that of others if we are going to effect a change. Collaboration is key. Who knew a little cardboard box would win a showcase at such a prestigious meeting. We are just beginning and hope you will join us in helping to make a difference. As Sheika Moza said at closing "we hope this conference can be a catalyst for innovation" and as Lord Darzi said 'The work begins as we go home'.
