A HALO route for diaspora-led and refugee-support organisations to turn clinical skill and experience into recognised, paid training capacity.

Who this is for

Across the UK, medically qualified refugees and diaspora communities hold clinical skills and experience that too often go unused while people wait to requalify, gain local recognition, or rebuild a professional network. At the same time, diaspora-led and refugee-support organisations are often looking for a structured way to turn that expertise into recognised training capacity, rather than one-off volunteering.

VeinTrain's HALO pathway offers a governed route into becoming a trainer: a structured way to move from individual clinical skill into organised training delivery, under a model that keeps clinical and organisational accountability with people, not with a certificate.

Why this pathway

External example

A BBC News report describes how Ahmed Bakheet, a Sudanese refugee and qualified sonographer, rebuilt his clinical career in the UK after being granted refugee status in 2025. Having been barred from working while his asylum claim was processed, he began volunteering at North Tees Hospital in Stockton-on-Tees through Helpforce's Volunteer to Career programme, and is now back in paid work as a sonographer.

In the same article, Helpforce chief executive Amerjit Chohan calls for greater investment in structured routes that help medically qualified refugees rebuild their careers in UK healthcare, describing a "torrent of talent" that remains underused.

What the HALO Train the Trainer pathway involves

How the pathway works

VeinTrain's Train the Trainer pathway, delivered through the HALO organisational deployment model, is designed to build local training capability rather than deliver one-off courses. Someone moving through the pathway progresses from developing their own clinical skills in IV Cannulation, venepuncture and phlebotomy, to being equipped to train others, using VeinTrain's Structured Learning Programme and Online Skills Lab.

HALO is a governed route. Training content, delivery standards and progression are structured by VeinTrain, while clinical and organisational accountability stays with the trainer and their employer or organisation throughout.

A VeinTrain certificate evidences training and learning activity. It does not replace an individual's or organisation's own competency sign-off, supervision, local policy or scope of practice requirements.

Where it starts

£809HALO Taster, entry point

The HALO Taster is VeinTrain's entry point into this pathway. Wider HALO packages, including the fuller organisational deployment tiers, are scoped separately with each organisation.

Building on work already under way

This pathway builds on development work VeinTrain already has under way for Somaliland, Zambia, Nigeria and other lower and middle income country contexts, including a ten-part evidence and learning article series. The groundwork for adapting HALO to different national and organisational contexts is already in progress.

A pathway, not a course

Rather than delivering isolated courses, VeinTrain works with organisations, trainers and diaspora-led initiatives to build training capability that can be sustained locally: developing trainers who can deliver and supervise others, embedding the Structured Learning Programme within an organisation's own governance, and scaling support through the HALO model as capacity grows, from a fully managed start through to more autonomous delivery.

What this looks like for a specific organisation, community group or diaspora-led initiative depends on their existing skills, governance and goals. This is a starting conversation, not a fixed programme.
