Implementation Support for the NHS Cannula Framework (partner preview)

The new NHS cannula framework is coming. The real work starts after the award.

NHS Supply Chain has confirmed a new Intravenous Cannula and Associated Products framework starting 1 April 2027 (Important Customer Notice ICN 3485, 22 September 2026), with increased supplier and product choice and a first supplier event on 15 October 2026. A framework award changes what can be bought. It does not, by itself, change clinical practice.

What still has to be delivered

Product evaluation, sampling and familiarisation, workforce readiness, practical skills, education, local assurance, feedback and adaptation all still have to happen, team by team. Trusts need confidence that a transition can be supported, not only that product can be supplied.

VeinTrain's implementation infrastructure

Before

Evaluation and trainer preparation before the change reaches the ward.

Competency stays local

Training supports a structured route to competence; competency is completed in clinical practice using the local workplace process. A VeinTrain certificate evidences training or programme completion. Final clinical competency sign-off remains with the employer, supervisor or clinical organisation, within local policy and scope of practice.

The governance point

Existing implementation evidence is commercially useful because Trusts need transition support. It does not imply that NHS Supply Chain requires suppliers to demonstrate an existing implementation site; the framework documentation governs that, not this page.
