Over the years, a lot of people have asked to “have a chat” with me. I enjoy those conversations. But I’ve come away from more than one realising it wasn’t really a chat at all. It drew on 10 to 20 years of clinical experience, organisational leadership, systems thinking and pattern recognition, and it produced something someone could take away and use immediately. That’s consultancy, even when nobody calls it that. HALO is what I built in response.

The conversations that were never just conversations

Like a lot of people whose expertise has grown through experience rather than a single product, I’ve probably given too much of that work away over the years. The apparent simplicity of a good insight can hide everything that sits behind it: the synthesis, the relationships, the years of noticing what matters and why.

HALO exists partly to change that. It gives organisations and partners a formal, commercially sustainable way to access intelligence, challenge, strategic judgement and implementation support, rather than relying on it turning up informally in a conversation that was never really billed as consultancy.

Why knowledge alone isn’t enough

HALO is not simply a knowledge hub. Knowledge is already abundant. Its purpose is to help people move through a much more demanding sequence:

Information → Connection → Intelligence → Judgement → Action → Learning

Artificial intelligence can search, organise, compare and summarise. Evidence libraries can preserve what’s known. Networks can bring different expertise into view. But somebody still has to recognise what matters. Somebody has to connect a small signal in one part of a system with its possible consequences elsewhere. Somebody has to ask the difficult question, test the interpretation, and work out what can actually be done. That’s where experience and wisdom become commercially valuable, and it’s the gap most knowledge hubs don’t close.

What HALO actually does

HALO combines several capabilities:

  • continual sensing of relevant developments and emerging signals
  • connection of evidence, policy, workforce knowledge and lived experience
  • access to specialist and cross-sector perspectives
  • challenge and interpretation, rather than passive information gathering
  • translation into an organisation’s particular context
  • support with action, implementation and execution
  • evaluation and learning as the system responds

It’s deliberately built as a living system, because the environments organisations operate in are complex and adaptive. Conditions change. People respond. One intervention alters the context for the next. Intelligence has to be continually refreshed, challenged and translated, not filed away and left to date.

My strength is execution

That doesn’t mean jumping prematurely to a solution. Good execution needs enough time to understand the task, the people, the relationships and the wider system first. But thinking has to eventually become movement. I built HALO so organisations can formally access that combination of synthesis, judgement and execution, and so the work can be sustained properly rather than given away piecemeal.

The commercial model matters here too. It’s what allows me to pay for the time it takes to keep learning, maintain the networks and infrastructure behind this, investigate emerging issues, and keep helping other people put their own knowledge and wisdom to work.

Nobody owns the Intelligence Age

This isn’t about owning public knowledge. Nobody owns the Intelligence Age, and intelligence hubs shouldn’t be rare or proprietary; more organisations should be building them. What’s distinctive isn’t the knowledge itself, it’s how the system is built: the quality of the thinking it enables, the experience brought to interpretation, and its ability to turn intelligence into responsible action. HALO is the architecture through which I now make that work available.
