Training readiness and implementation support for vascular-access workforce development across London NHS services.

VeinTrain is a specialist provider of IV cannulation, IV Line, venepuncture and phlebotomy training. We help NHS trusts and healthcare services across London turn a training decision into repeatable local delivery: building internal trainer capacity, keeping practice consistent across sites and preparing teams for product or service change.

The question worth asking: what should an NHS trust look for in vascular access training?

Why one-off training is not enough

A training day can get a group of staff started. It rarely keeps a large service consistent. New starters arrive every month, staff move between wards and sites, and a change of cannula, device or service model can unsettle practice that was working well.

What holds up over time is local capability: your own trainers, a shared approach to practical skills and a simple way to bring new staff up to the same standard. That is the shift VeinTrain supports, from a single purchase to delivery your teams can repeat.

What to look for in training

Whether you are reviewing a current provider or planning something new, these are the questions worth asking.

  • Clear scope. Which staff groups, skills and settings are included, and which are not.
  • Internal trainer capacity. Will you end up with people in your own organisation who can teach, or will you always need to buy in?
  • Supervised practical practice. Simulation that lets staff practise realistic technique before and alongside workplace practice.
  • Consistency across sites. The same core content, materials and expectations in acute, outpatient and community settings.
  • Change readiness. Support when a product, stock line or service pathway changes, including the manufacturer's instructions for use where relevant.
  • Current, version-controlled content. Learning that is kept up to date, with a clear version your trainers can rely on.
  • Fit with your local processes. Training that sits alongside your own policies and workplace processes.
  • Review and sustainability. A planned point to check what is working and how local delivery will continue.

Learn, Train, Scale

VeinTrain is organised around three stages. Most trusts use more than one.

Learn

Structured learning for individual staff: the VeinTrain Online Academy, the Online Skills Lab and the Structured Learning Programme, so learners arrive at practical sessions with the theory in place.

Train

Train the Trainer develops your own clinical educators and practitioners to teach IV cannulation, IV Line, venepuncture and phlebotomy training locally, using the VeinTrain Simulator Unit, the Online Skills Lab and structured learning materials.

Scale

HALO is VeinTrain's organisational route for structured multi-site rollout support: helping a trust or service build a local training model that keeps working as teams grow and change. Read more about training at scale with VeinTrain.

Built for London services

London services bring particular pressures: large multi-site organisations, high staff turnover, and patients who move between acute, outpatient, community and home-based care. Practice needs to be consistent at every one of those interfaces.

VeinTrain works with NHS trusts and healthcare services across London under agreed training arrangements suited to each service, from a single site to several.

Choose your route

Train the Trainer

Best for: a service that wants its own trainers, starting with one or a few people.

Live trainer input with the VeinTrain Simulator Unit, QR-linked guidance, the Online Skills Lab and structured learning materials, so your trainers can begin delivering local courses with confidence.

HALO Taster

Best for: a team that wants to test the VeinTrain system with a small cohort before a wider decision.

A supported entry route into the VeinTrain system for a small cohort, combining trainer development and learner access. Exact package contents are confirmed with Sarah at scoping stage. A Taster is a way to try the model; it does not in itself make an organisation a HALO Centre.

Wider HALO

Best for: trusts and services planning structured, consistent rollout across several teams or sites.

A configured programme shaped around your cohort, sites and starting point, with trainer development, simulation, learner access and review built in.

How we work with you

  1. Scoping conversation. A short call to understand your service, staff groups and what prompted the review.
  2. Workforce and service review. We look together at current training, trainer capacity, sites and any product or service change coming up.
  3. Route selection. We recommend the route that fits: Train the Trainer, HALO Taster or wider HALO.
  4. Agreed implementation plan. A practical plan covering who is trained, when, where and how local delivery continues, with a review point built in.

Where your trust is changing a cannula, device or stock line, see our article on NHS product-change readiness. Procurement and supplies teams are welcome at the scoping conversation alongside clinical education leads.

Working alongside your organisation

VeinTrain supports learning, practical skills development and implementation. Your organisation keeps its own policies, supervision, scope-of-practice decisions and competency sign-off, and a VeinTrain certificate records training completion rather than replacing local sign-off. Read how certificates and competency fit together.

Frequently asked questions

Who is this for?

Clinical education and practice development teams, vascular access and infusion leads, renal, outpatient and community services, and workforce and transformation leads in London NHS trusts and healthcare services. Procurement and supplies leads often join the conversation too.

Can VeinTrain help us build our own trainers?

Yes. Train the Trainer is designed to develop your own clinical educators and practitioners so they can deliver IV cannulation, IV Line, venepuncture and phlebotomy training locally, with ongoing support from VeinTrain.

How do you keep training consistent across several sites?

By using the same core learning, simulation equipment and trainer approach at every site, supported by the Online Academy and a shared implementation plan. HALO provides structured multi-site rollout support for larger organisations.

Can you support a change of cannula, device or stock line?

Yes. We can help you prepare staff and trainers for a product or service change, working alongside the manufacturer's instructions for use and your own local processes.

What is the difference between HALO Taster and wider HALO?

HALO Taster is a small, supported way to test the VeinTrain system with a cohort. Wider HALO is a configured programme for structured multi-site rollout support across teams or sites.

Does a VeinTrain certificate mean a member of staff is competent?

No. A VeinTrain certificate records training or programme completion. Competency is assessed and signed off in clinical practice through your organisation's own process.

Do you work across London?

We work with individual NHS trusts and healthcare services in London and across the UK. VeinTrain is based in Nottingham and delivers live, online and in-person support.

How do we start?

Book a scoping conversation. We will talk through your service and recommend a practical next step.
